Web Databases

What is a Database?

A database is an organised collection of information, usually with one central topic. The word organised is a key part of this definition. Otherwise, a shoebox stuffed with business receipts might be considered a database. In general, if you need to look at every scrap of data before finding the one for which you are searching, you don't have a database. You have just have a shoe box full of stuff.

Every database is composed of records. A record contains all the information that has been collected on one individual or entity in the database. Records are divided into fields. A field contains a single piece of information about the subject of the record. In an product database, for example, the fields may include product name, size, colour, location, number in stock, delivery dates, etc. A photograph can also be a field and can be placed and viewed, on your Database as easily as text.

Relevant fields, can be displayed on different pages, to inform potential customers, requiring different information. For example; Products in a certain size, Product range in a certain colour, New releases, Special offers, etc.

Why Host a Database on the Internet?

When you host a database on the Web, the number of people who can use your file is potentially very large: the only requirements are Web browser software and access to the Internet. Your information is available for anyone, using virtually any kind of computer, virtually anywhere in the world, to view your information they require. You can, however, limit access to certain parts of the file. You can if required add, edit and delete data from your database anywhere - another office, at home or even on the road.
